How monitoring works
At regular intervals the
printf spider will reach out to
your web site to ensure it is loading properly.
If something goes wrong, such as not being
able to connect to the server, or finding that the page
displayed on your site is not correct, it will notify you
at once.
Notifications are sent via SMTP email and
hence can go either to your email inbox, or any cellular
phone or pager that supports SMTP.

Why monitoring is important
If your web site matters to you then of
course you want to know it is up when your visitors or customer
come calling.
More than that you need to quickly fix any
outages, not just because of your normal visitors, but also
because of the many automated systems such as Search Engine
Spiders which may visit your site.
If a web site is unavailable when a Search
Engine Spider visits it may be marked as "unavailable" and
be excluded from the Search Engine listings.
